                     MEMORIES OF GLEN ALUM

Memories, stories and a few pictures, and more memories.......That is all we have of a place that is so dear to anyone who ever lived in the small coal mining community of Glen Alum nestled in the back hills of Southern West Virginia. MEMORIES. There are no houses left now, the flow of the creek has been changed, and the roads and railroad tracks have been moved to different areas in the hollow. We only have our memories. And that is what this web site is all about. MEMORIES OF GLEN ALUM.

When I got my personal computer a few years ago, the first thing I did was search for a site that someone might have set up concerning Glen Alum. I have continued to search and have found only a few articles concerning this area. So I decided to open a site that would allow anyone with ties to Glen Alum of any kind to visit, review and get involved with keeping the memories of Glen Alum alive. My main objectives are to post many pictures and stories of Glen Alum from anyone who will email them to me, to maintain a message board where former residents or relatives of former residents can leave a message and a brief description of their current life style and family matters, and in other words, KEEP US CONNECTED AND GLEN ALUM MEMORIES ALIVE.

So please dig deep into those old pictures and into the archives of your mind and send me anything you would like to see placed on this site to help preserve our memories. Send this site to all your Glen Alum buddies and send me anything you would like to post to judyfromglenalum@hotmail.com. If someone you know doesn't have a computer, ask them to mail copies of their pictures and stories to you or to me at 145 Bens Creek Station Road, Wharncliffe, WV, 25651. Yes, I still live over the hill from Glen Alum at Ben Creek.

My husband and I visit Glen Alum at least once every year. Nothing to really see. We just go. But I always tell him as we ride down through Miller Town, "Now so and so lived there, and their children are so and so." He never says much. He has heard these stories every time we have been to Glen Alum and I guess he knows how much it means to me to reminisce. Yes, I remember. When our vehicle starts the journey up Glen Alum mountain, I begin to remember, and as we descend into the hollow, I feel something warm close in around me, that only a former resident of Glen Alum would experience. A warmth brought about by all the lives that were lived in that small community. The ghosts of our past. And such good ghosts they are. There is a relationship between former residents of Glen Alum that I have not found anywhere else in this world, unless it would be another small coal camp. You can travel many miles by train, boat, or plane, and there is a chance you will meet someone with some connection to Glen ALum.

My name is Judy Aker Hatfield. I am the youngest daughter of Ray and Hattie Aker. As I have told you, I live at Ben Creek. I married Roger Hatfield. Roger and I have two children, John and Stacey. John and his wife Kim have two children, Nathan Beheler and Blake Ellison Hatfield. They live in Kentucky. Stacey and her husband, Robert, reside in Virginia. They have two children, Eleanora Grace and David Alexander.

I want to impress upon you, that this in not my site, I just opened it. It is OUR site. It belongs to anyone who has a memory of Glen Alum. So if you lived there, had relatives who lived there, worked at Glen Alum or have heard a story or have a picture concerning Glen Alum, send it to me and we will post it on this site. Visit the message board and leave a brief message.

Through this Internet site we can keep the stories and memories alive, renew old acquaintances and enjoy our MEMORIES OF GLEN ALUM.
