MY MEMORIES OF GLEN ALUM
by MAVIS BOWEN BURTON
In most of our lives
one teacher stands out. Mine seems to be Dwight Elkins. Was so glad to see
references to him on my recent visit to the Glen Alum website.
Your work is a delight to those of us who know the area. My siblings & I were
seldom in Glen Alum proper, other than 1 visit to the theatre in the late 1930's
and regular trips to Glen Alum RR station for mail and to catch the train.
However, you share with us a common denominator: COAL, THE RR, AND TUG RIVER.
Beginning in 1936, my immediate family of Blaine Bowens lived on the
hillside above the mainline RR, 1/2 way between Glen Alum & Lindsey. From the
tunnel & going toward Williamson, the 1st family was the Crofts, who lived right
on the river. My friend Virginia Croft became an RN in Williamson. Next came
the Roberts & Creska families, who ran a small general store. Then my
grandparents home, Millard & Emily Bowen and their several kids. Across a
gulley were my parents, Blaine & Ollie Spears Bowen and 6 children. The Bowen
men all had worked for the N&W. Blaine was diagnosed with a terminal illness
while we lived in Columbus, and moved back to that area to be near his
parents. Downhill from us & closer to the tracks lived Arch & Ruby Miller
Adkins and family. Towards Lindsey lived several more families. (Millard &
Emily Bowen eventually moved to Ben Creek).
In about 1937, Dwight Elkins began to teach in the 1-room, 8 grades
Lindsey school. The following year, Virginia Croft & I started 9th grade at
Matewan, traveling daily by train. My brothers Willis, Wannis & Don Bowen
continued at Lindsey with Mr. Elkins. Two yrs later, our family moved to
Williamson..
Eventually I went to TN to work @ Oak Ridge, married, and in 1960 moved to CA
where I worked for 30 yrs in med. research. Am now retired, living in the San
Bernardino mountains. Brother Willis still lives in Williamson, sis Joan in the
Las Vegas area, and bro. Wannis in Frostproof, FL.
I will continue to check in to the Glen Alum site from time to time. I would
like to know if Mr. Elkins is still alive. Would love to read a bio of him.
Best wishes, and with thanks-- Mavis Bowen Burton. PO B 1598, Big Bear

Note: I received the above email from Mavis and she gave me permission to post it to our site.
