REUNION OF BETTY SIMPSON AND ELLEN NOE
AUGUST 2003

LIKE MOST OF US, TWO LITTLE GIRLS WERE BORN IN GLEN ALUM INTO FAMILIES OF COAL MINERS. THEY ATTENDED THE SAME SCHOOL, IN THE SAME GRADE AND BECAME THE BEST OF FRIENDS.

ELLEN NOE WAS THE DAUGHTER OF BILL AND LULA NOE. BETTY SIMPSON WAS THE DAUGHTER OF ALLEN AND JANE SIMPSON. AGAIN, AS MOST OF US DID, THEY LEFT GLEN ALUM AND WENT THEIR SEPARATE WAYS. ELLEN NOE MARRIED TOM NICHOLS AND MOVED AWAY FROM THE SMALL COMMUNITY. TOM AND ELLEN HAD TWO DAUGHTERS, SHARON AND PEGGY.

BETTY SIMPSON MARRIED EMMITT WOMACK AND THEY HAD FOUR DAUGHTERS. SHE ALSO LEFT GLEN ALUM TO START A NEW LIFE IN MISSOURI. BETTY HAS TEN GRANDCHILDREN AND ONE GREAT GRANDDAUGHTER.SHE IS A WIDOW NOW, HER HUSBAND EMMITT PASSED AWAY SEVEN YEARS AGO. SHE STILL LIVES IN MISSOURI ABOUT TWENTY MILES FROM ST. LOUIS.

THEY LIVED BUSY LIVES RAISING THEIR FAMILIES, BUT THE MEMORIES OF THE LITTLE COAL CAMP CALLED GLEN ALUM AND THE DEAR FRIENDS THEY LEFT BEHIND WERE ALWAYS IN THE BACK OF THEIR MINDS.

ELLEN'S DAUGHTER, PEGGY WAS TOLD OF THE GLEN ALUM SITE BY DANNY SWAFFORD, ANOTHER FORMER GLEN ALUM RESIDENT. WHEN PEGGY SAW A PICTURE OF BETTY SIMPSON ON THE SITE, SHE IMMEDIATELY INVITED HER MOM, ELLEN OVER TO SEE THE SITE. ELLEN WAS IN AWE AT ALL THE PICTURES OF FRIENDS AND FAMILY THAT WERE ON THE SITE.

AFTER 58 YEARS, ELLEN AND BETTY WERE TO MEET AGAIN.

PEGGY USED THE EMAIL ADDRESS FROM THE GLEN ALUM SITE TO CONTACT JERRY AND JOSIE SIMPSON (BROTHER AND SISTER-IN-LAW OF BETTY) AND THEY MADE ARRANGEMENTS TO MEET. THEY LIVED ONLY 130 MILES APART. THEY ARRANGED A MEETING FOR ELLEN AND BETTY AT A DENNY'S RESTAURANT WHICH WAS ABOUT HALF WAY BETWEEN THEIR HOMES.

BETTY AND ELLEN

AFTER MEETING AT THE RESTAURANT, THEY SPENT A FEW HOURS IN A PARK REMINISCING ABOUT THE GOOD OLE DAYS IN GLEN ALUM AND TELLING SOME OF THOSE TALL STORIES WE ALL HAVE EXPERIENCED.

EMMA, BETTY, ELLEN, PEGGY AND JOSIE

IT WAS A VERY ENJOYABLE AND EMOTIONAL DAY FOR BOTH FAMILIES.

EMMA, JERRY, BETTY AND ELLEN

TWO VERY DEAR FRIENDS WERE REUNITED AFTER 58 YEARS. BETTY AND ELLEN STAY IN TOUCH WITH LONG LETTERS AND PHONE CALLS.
